This phrase indicates a divine change of course, highlighting God's mercy and willingness to respond to intercession. The Hebrew word for "relented" can also mean "repented" or "changed His mind," suggesting a shift in divine intention due to prayer or repentance. This is consistent with other instances in Scripture where God responds to human intercession, such as Moses' intercession for Israel in Exodus 32:14. It underscores the dynamic relationship between God and His people, where divine judgment is not inevitable but can be averted through genuine repentance and prayer. “It will not happen,” He said. This declaration from God emphasizes His sovereign control over history and events. Despite the impending judgment shown in the vision, God's pronouncement ensures that the specific calamity will not occur. This reflects God's character as both just and merciful, willing to withhold judgment in response to repentance or intercession. It also points to the prophetic role of Amos, whose intercession plays a crucial part in the narrative. The phrase echoes other biblical assurances of God's mercy, such as inJonah 3:10, where God spares Nineveh after they repent. This also foreshadows the ultimate mercy shown through Jesus Christ, who intercedes on behalf of humanity, offering salvation and averting eternal judgment for those who believe. Persons / Places / Events 1. AmosA prophet from Tekoa, a small town in Judah, who was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and repentance to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. 2. The LORD (Yahweh)The covenant God of Israel, who communicates His plans and intentions through His prophets. In this verse, He shows His mercy by relenting from a planned judgment. 3. IsraelThe Northern Kingdom, which was often in rebellion against God, leading to prophetic warnings of impending judgment. 4. Vision of LocustsPrior to this verse, Amos sees a vision of locusts devouring the land, symbolizing a severe judgment that God intended to bring upon Israel. 5. IntercessionAmos intercedes on behalf of Israel, pleading with God to forgive and spare the nation from the impending disaster. Teaching Points The Power of IntercessionAmos's intercession shows the importance and effectiveness of praying for others. Believers are called to stand in the gap for their communities and nations, seeking God's mercy and intervention. God's Relenting NatureGod's willingness to relent from judgment reveals His compassionate and merciful character. He desires repentance and restoration rather than punishment. The Role of ProphetsProphets like Amos serve as mediators between God and His people, delivering messages of warning and hope. They remind us of the importance of listening to God's voice and responding appropriately. Repentance and MercyThe potential for God to relent from judgment emphasizes the importance of repentance. When individuals and nations turn from sin, they open the door to God's mercy and forgiveness. God's Sovereignty and CompassionWhile God is sovereign and just, He is also compassionate and responsive to the prayers and actions of His people. This balance encourages believers to trust in His perfect will and character. Lists and Questions Top 10 Lessons from Amos 7

What is the meaning of God's mystery?
Amos 3:7: How can God do nothing without informing prophets first, and are there instances in the Bible contradicting this idea?(3) The Lord repented.--The judgment is withheld. On the anthropomorphism of Jehovah repenting, comp. Genesis 6:5 and other passages. Verse 3. - Repented for this; or, concerning this destruction. The punishment was conditioned by man's behaviour or other considerations. Here the prophet's intercession abates the full infliction of the penalty (compare analogous expressions, Deuteronomy 32:36; 1 Samuel 15:11; 2 Samuel 24:16; Jeremiah 18:8; Jeremiah 42:10; Jonah 3:10, where see note). Amos may have had in memory the passage in Joel 2:13. The LXX. here and in ver. 6 has Μετανόησον Κύριε ἐπὶτούτῳ καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔσται λέγει Κύριος, "Repent, O Lord, for this; and this shall not be, saith the Lord." Hence some early commentators gathered that the prophet's intercession was rejected; but the words do not necessarily bear that sense (see St. Cyril Alex. and Theodoret, in loc.). It shall not be. This respite refers to the retreat of the Assyrians under Pul, the usurping monarch who assumed the name of Tiglath-Pileser II. ( 2 Kings 15:17, etc.). Some commentators consider the judgment to be literally plague of locusts; but this is not probable.
