| Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament following premature dissolution of this body. General elections had previously been held in October 1993. | |

| The outcome of the 1997 general elections signified that the ruling Patriotic Union (VU) continued in power with its historic conservative coalition partner, the Progressive Citizens' Party (FBPL). In the event, the VU retained its absolute majority of 13 seats in the 25-member Diet while the FBPL lost one seat to the ecological Free List (FL). On 10 March, the FBPL voted to withdraw from the long-standing coalition. On 9 April, the new Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Mario Frick (VU) was selected by the Landtag; it had been formally nominated by the Head of State, Prince Hans-Adam II. | |
