James H. Lemly spent his earlyyears in Jackson Mississippi. Hedid undergraduate work at Millsaps College in Jackson, and at the University ofMississippi. After service in WorldWar II, he studied Transportation Economics and Business Administration atIndiana University where he received his doctorate in 1952. The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio is the product of hisdissertation studies and was published in 1953. In the fall of 1952 he began teaching at theUniversity of Georgia and later transferred to Georgia State College, (laterGeorgia State University) where he retired in 1980. After this time he taught at North Carolina State Universityuntil 1985. During his universityteaching and research years he served in a six-month study of transportation inPakistan. Beginning in 1966 hespent several years teaching at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Later he was instrumental in a transportation study for the Government ofGhana.
