05-20/18:16 Corinthian: I think that even once a winning strategy is found, however, there are ways we could make Brandubh interesting and playable. One possible remedy I have in mind is to implement "freestyle" rules, where certain rule parameters are randomized and decided at the start of each game (e.g. who starts first, passive capturing, handicaps, etc.). This way, the same winning strategy won't work each time, and players will have to think on the spot rather than playing out predetermined moves. A second option would be to impose a handicap on the side with the advantage by changing the win conditions. For example, if we find that White can always win in n moves, the win conditions for black could be changed to "last until move n + 1". Another option could be to have all rated Brandubh games be played in pairs, with the player who wins in a fewer number of moves winning the match overall. Finally, on another note, I think I have to disagree with Alex Hnefatafl on one point. While further restricting the number of moves (e.g. only the King may pass through the throne) will reduce the total number of possible games, it may very well increase the number of "interesting" games, since it does allow certain lines for Black that used to result in certain defeat to become viable options.

05-20/17:07 Corinthian: I do think I have to agree with Alex Hnefatafl here, in part. I do think that no matter what set of rules we use for Brandubh, given enough time, someone will be able to solve the game by hand. The number of viable moves will always be manageable for a human to calculate. I still think, however, that it is worth attempting to make the game more balanced so that neither side has a clear advantage from the start. Ultimately, we should hope for a winning strategy to take as many moves as possible.

05-20/09:57 Hagbard: Alex Hnefatafl:В Хнефатафле очень много комбинаций и огромное дерево вариантов. На доске 11×11 вариантов возможных ходов явно больше, чем в шахматах. Но в Хнефатафле во многих вариантах очень маленький процент именно логичных и ведущих к победе ходов. Большинство возможных ходов из общего дерева вариантов являются бесполезными. Например, в историческом Хнефатафле 11×11 при расстановке  ,, колокол" по сравнению с расстановкой  ,, крест" на порядок меньше полезных правильных ходов, ведущих к победе для белых. В итоге игра является более скудной на комбинации и у белых почти нет шансов при правильной игре чëрных. Поэтому общепринята расстановка  ,, крест", а не ,,колокол". В Brandubh очень мало полезных ходов из общего дерева вариантов. И любое ограничение правил ещë больше сократит это количество. Игра окончательно превратится в  ,, крестики-нолики". Brandubh(Walker) мне просто не нравится. Я считаю, что brandubh это решëнный вариант. Нужно отключить рейтинг для всех досок 7×7 и убрать в архив все варианты 7×7, кроме brandubh2. У сообщества есть проблемы поважнее. Каждый год проходит чемпионат по Копенгагену. Это спорный вариант. И почти никто не пытался нормально тестировать Копенгаген с первым ходом белого.

Knowing that the outcome is almost predetermined against other players who know the correct lines for White has also made the game less fun. Since we're already playing currently, I'd be happy to test out Brandubh2.5 rules in our next games.
